These are 14 model itineraries within Japan, grouped into day trips, 1 night, 2 nights and 3 nights or more. Each table shows where the trip starts and the local costs for two people that the article added up. Every article counts different things, so the right-hand column lists what was left out of the figure. Check it before comparing.

Fares and facility details reflect the date each article was checked and can change with timetable revisions. Please rely on the operators’ official sites for the latest prices.

Day trips (4)

Out in the morning, back at night. The spread comes from what each article counted: Miyajima covers only transport and admission, while Tottori includes meals.

Plan Start Local costs (2 people) Not included
Kamakura One-Day Model Course From Tokyo Round trip from Tokyo Station 10,160 yen City bus fares and meals
Hiroshima to Miyajima Day Trip Model Course Round trip from central Hiroshima 3,440 yen Meals

1 night, 2 days (3)

One night in a hotel. Fukuoka and Kanazawa count only ground costs, while Tateyama Kurobe includes lodging and meals, so the figures do not rank the trips from cheap to expensive.

Plan Start Local costs (2 people) Not included
Kanazawa 2-Day, 1-Night Model Plan Kanazawa city 6,980 yen Shinkansen, lodging and meals
Fukuoka 2-Day, 1-Night Plan After a Late-Night Flight Fukuoka Airport (arrival after midnight) 3,360 yen Flights, lodging and meals

2 nights, 3 days (5)

Routes that stay in one area or move the base partway. Misawa-Hachinohe counts solo costs including lodging, rental car and meals; Kashiwajima counts lodging and activities for two; the other three exclude lodging and meals.

Plan Start Local costs (2 people) Not included
Kanazawa and Kaga Onsen 3-Day Itinerary Round trip from Kanazawa 11,200 yen Rail fares, lodging and meals

Kashiwajima and Shimanto 3-Day, 2-Night Self-Drive Plan Round trip from Kochi Ryoma Airport 20,000 to 40,000 yen Flights and base rental car rate

3 nights or more (2)

Trips of four days or longer. Neither figure includes the trip to the destination or lodging; both add up local transport and admission fees.

Plan Start Local costs (2 people) Not included
Okinawa Outlying Islands in 4 Days (Ishigaki, Taketomi, Iriomote) Three nights in Ishigaki town 38,720 yen Flights, lodging and meals
A First-Timer’s 5-Day Tokyo Model Course Four nights in Tokyo 43,580 yen Travel to Tokyo, lodging and meals

A Note on Comparing the Cost Figures

Twelve of the 14 articles count costs for two people. Those figures run from 3,360 yen for Fukuoka to 88,320 yen for Tateyama Kurobe. Most of the gap comes from what was counted, not the number of days: Tateyama Kurobe includes lodging and meals, and Fukuoka does not. The Hakodate day trip and the Misawa-Hachinohe solo plan are figures for a single person, so do not line them up directly with the two-person rows.

Hotel availability around key transit hubs can be searched and booked across major online travel platforms according to your dates.

Constraints to Keep in Mind When Choosing an Itinerary

Pre-scheduled model itineraries feature limited buffer time against sudden weather shifts or train delays, making them less suitable for travelers who prefer frequent unscheduled detours.

Ferries and high-speed rail lines in particular carry risks of service suspensions or reduced runs during strong winds and severe weather. When planning travel in winter with early sunsets or during typhoon season, scheduling departures at least one service ahead of the final departure is essential for reliable transit.
