Maintenance Closures and Seasonal Suspensions
Mountain railways and cable cars close for annual maintenance from autumn into early winter, and depending on your dates, part of this itinerary may not work. The details below are based on each operator’s official timetables and notices as of 12 October 2026. The dates change every year, so always check the latest official information before you travel.
- Gornergrat Railway (DAY 6): From 2 to 14 November 2026 the line is closed for construction work and no trains run at all. From 15 to 27 November trains run every 48 minutes (Gornergrat Railway official timetable). If DAY 6 falls in this period, rework the parts of the itinerary that depend on the Gornergrat.
- Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (DAY 7): The 3S cable car from Trockener Steg is under annual inspection from 28 September to 30 October 2026 and from 26 April to 21 May 2027, and during these periods it is replaced by the aerial tramway (Pendelbahn). Between Zermatt and Trockener Steg, the aerial tramway (Zermatt – Furi – Trockener Steg) also runs from 28 September to 13 November 2026, and the Matterhorn Express via Schwarzsee reopens on 14 November (Zermatt Bergbahnen official summer and winter timetables).
- Eiger Express (DAY 3): In the Berner Oberland Pass table of operating periods, the Grindelwald Terminal – Eigergletscher section is split into a period up to 8 November 2026 and a period from 21 November, and 9 to 20 November falls outside the operating periods. If you travel at this time, check the Jungfrau Railways service information just before you go.
- Mount Rigi (DAY 2): The Weggis – Rigi Kaltbad cable car is closed continuously for maintenance from 1 March to 2 April 2027. The timetable of the cog railway from Vitznau also lists additional trains during maintenance of this cable car on 16–20 and 23–27 November 2026 (Monday to Friday). If your itinerary uses the cable car on the way down, switch to the railway via Vitznau during these periods (Rigi Railways official timetable).
- Mürren (DAY 4): The Lauterbrunnen – Grütschalp – Mürren section is out of service for maintenance from 26 October to 6 November 2026. The Mürren – Allmendhubel funicular is also closed from 19 October to 11 December 2026 (Schilthorn Railways official timetable). A walk on the Flower Trail cannot be planned in this period.
Facilities not listed here may also close for maintenance, so check each operator’s official page for service on the day you ride. Sources: Gornergrat Railway, Zermatt Bergbahnen, Berner Oberland Pass, Rigi Railways, Schilthorn Railways (checked 12 October 2026).
Itinerary Modification Options
Rainy Day Adjustments
If cloud cover obscures high mountain summits, swap mountain peaks for cultural highlights. Take a direct train from Interlaken to Bern (covered by Swiss Travel Pass) to explore 6 kilometers of weatherproof historic covered arcades, or visit the indoor Matterhorn Museum in Zermatt.
Flight Delays
If incoming flights arrive late on Day 1, stay the first night in Zurich and take an early train to Lucerne on Day 2 without disrupting the overall schedule.
Fatigue Management
If daily hiking feels strenuous, replace the Day 4 or Day 6 walks with relaxing lakeside boat cruises or village cafe relaxation.
Why We Skipped the Full 8-Hour Glacier Express
While the Glacier Express is famous, sitting in a single train car for 8 consecutive hours between Zermatt and St. Moritz can be physically tiring and requires separate expensive seat reservations (approx. 49 CHF in peak season). Instead, our itinerary utilizes standard regional trains along the scenic sections, dedicating more quality hours to alpine exploration in Grindelwald and Zermatt.
