Mount Fuji closed for the year on 10 September 2026 and the climbing season is over. The rule that governed this summer was a single entry fee of JPY 4,000 per person on all four trails across Yamanashi and Shizuoka, with the JPY 1,000 conservation donation folded into it. Yoshida and Subashiri opened on 1 July, Fujinomiya and Gotemba on 10 July, and all four closed on 10 September.

JPY 4,000 on every trail, with Yoshida on a reservation and the Shizuoka side on a registration

Guides that describe the Shizuoka trails as free are still sitting in the search results. They describe the summer of 2024, when Yoshida alone charged a JPY 2,000 toll and the three Shizuoka trails charged nothing. In 2026 every trail asks JPY 4,000, 100% more than the old Yoshida toll, and arriving at a trailhead on the strength of an old article means paying the full amount there rather than a difference. The JPY 1,000 conservation donation has been absorbed into the fee, and there is no longer anything to pay separately.

The procedure differs far more than the price. Yoshida is capped at 4,000 climbers a day: you register the date, the time and the party size in the Yamanashi reservation system, pay the entry fee up front, and hold the QR code up at the gate at the fifth station. Once the cap is reached the gate shuts. The three Shizuoka trails have no cap, but entry depends on registering with Shizuoka FUJI NAVI and then taking an e-learning course on the rules and passing a confirmation test. Registration ran from 8 May to 10 September, and the fee can be paid at the counter on site. Registration produces a two-dimensional code, and a wristband is handed over at the trailhead. Yamanashi turns you away on numbers; Shizuoka turns you away on homework.

One rule is identical on both sides. Entering the mountain between 14:00 and the following 03:00 requires a booking at a mountain hut, a measure aimed squarely at overnight dashes to the summit. On cost, a day return on the Yoshida Trail from the Tokyo area comes to roughly JPY 30,000: the JPY 4,000 fee, about JPY 8,000 of transport, about JPY 3,000 for food, water and toilet tips, and about JPY 15,000 to rent or buy the gear. Adding a hut night puts accommodation at JPY 11,000 to 15,000 for one night with two meals and doubles the supplies, landing between JPY 43,000 and 47,000. That difference of JPY 13,000 to 17,000, 43% to 57% on top of the day trip, is what lowering the risk of altitude sickness costs.

As of 14 September 2026 the mountain is shut. Yoshida, Subashiri and Gotemba are closed from the fifth station to the summit for the winter, Fujinomiya from the sixth, and the Ohachi-meguri crater circuit is closed with them. On the Yoshida Trail, refunds were announced for tolls already paid for 9 and 10 September. For next season, the decision to make first is the trail. Yoshida has the most huts and first-aid stations and carries beginners well, and it is also the most crowded. Fujinomiya is the shortest way up, at the cost of a steeper gradient and an identical path down. Subashiri climbs through forest and gives back the sand run on the descent. Gotemba is the longest and the biggest climb, and the emptiest. If the answer is to look at the mountain rather than stand on it, we have a guide to where to see Mount Fuji from, and a two-day Fuji Five Lakes route without a car for the area around it. Rooms for the night before or after can be found near Gotemba, Fujisan and Fujinomiya stations on Klook and similar sites.

Who it’s forA first climb next season. The Yoshida Trail has the huts and the first-aid stations, and its paperwork ends at a reservation and a payment. It is useless to anyone who wants to decide on the morning of the day: Yoshida runs out at 4,000 climbers, and the Shizuoka trails will not let you in until the e-learning course has been taken and passed.
Already booked?Anyone who paid in advance for 9 or 10 September on the Yoshida Trail is covered by the announced refund. The procedure is posted in the news section of the official climbing site; check it against the card statement for the payment.
Compared with past salesUp to the summer of 2024, Yoshida charged a JPY 2,000 toll and the Shizuoka side was free. In 2026 all four trails charge JPY 4,000 and the optional JPY 1,000 donation has been absorbed. On the Yoshida Trail alone that is a 100% rise in two years. The larger change against those older articles is not the level of the fee but the fact that no free route is left.
