JR Tokai Tours ran its Summer Travel Clearance Sale from 13:00 on 19 June 2026 to 20:00 on 29 June, for departures on Sunday through Thursday only. It applied to EX Tabi Pack, which puts a Tokaido Shinkansen return together with a hotel night, and Tokyo to Shin-Osaka started at JPY 25,340 for one adult. Travel had to begin between 20 July and 17 September, and the booking had to be in at least 30 days before the day of departure.
Tokyo to Shin-Osaka came to JPY 25,340 with a hotel night, JPY 3,700 under the train fare on its own
Sale prices are for one adult with a return reserved seat in an ordinary car and one night’s accommodation (two sharing, no meals, as shown at 13:00 on 19 June 2026). The figure on the right is the Smart EX return fare for a reserved ordinary-car seat on a Nozomi in the regular season.
Line the four sections up and the discount turns out to be the room. Tokyo to Shin-Osaka sold at JPY 25,340 against JPY 29,040 for the train alone, so the JPY 3,700 gap already covers more than a night’s stay. Kyoto landed JPY 4,390 under the rail fare and Nagoya JPY 3,120 under. Nagoya to Kyoto went the other way: JPY 11,550 against a return fare of JPY 11,420, JPY 130 more. On the short sections there is not enough fare to absorb a hotel.
Two conditions did most of the work. Fridays and Saturdays were excluded, so of the 60 days in the travel window only 44 were departure days, and across Obon from 13 to 16 August that left Thursday the 13th and Sunday the 16th. The 30-day booking rule bit harder still. Apply on the closing day of 29 June and the earliest departure available was 29 July; anyone who moved on the opening day could take 20 July. Waiting cost calendar, not money.
Destinations ran to twelve areas: the Tokaido Shinkansen corridor plus Mie, Nara and Shiga. Departure regions reached further than that, as far as Chugoku and Kyushu, but nothing in Tohoku or Hokuriku appeared on the destination side, and neither did Kyushu. A standard two or three days in Kyoto was well inside the map; a run north was not. Changing the Shinkansen departure time was free and could be done as often as you liked, and the pack needed either Smart EX, which costs nothing to join, or Express Reservation at JPY 1,100 a year.
