Arriving on a morning flight at Kochi Ryoma Airport is the primary recommendation for completing this southwest Shikoku tour with peace of mind. Southwest Kochi is one of the most distant regions from Tokyo, requiring a drive via expressway of 130 km (180 min) to Shimanto City, 155 km (210 min) to Sukumo, and 175 km (240 min) to Cape Ashizuri from the airport. Public transit takes hours with infrequent transfers, making a rental car the only realistic choice for exploring this rural paradise efficiently.

After collecting your luggage, proceed to the rental car counter in the arrivals lobby for a quick shuttle ride to the depot. A compact car class or similar maneuverable vehicle is ideal, as village roads around Kashiwajima and Otsuki Town are narrow. For more domestic flight planning tips, check our Domestic Flight Sales Guide before booking.

Route / Transportation Estimated Travel Time Cost for Two (Approx.) Recommended Traveler Profile
Drive from Kochi Ryoma Airport (Via Expressway) 180 min (130 km) to Shimanto City / 210 min (155 km) to Sukumo Kashiwajima Parking 500 JPY/day; Airport Parking max 800 JPY/24h Travelers who prioritize time efficiency and flexible coastal driving
Sightseeing Bus “Shimanto-Ashizuri-go” (From Nakamura Sta.) 1-Day / 2-Day Course (Min. 1 participant) Adult 3,800 JPY / Child 1,900 JPY (Half-day course Adult 1,500 JPY) Travelers wishing to tour Shimanto, Kashiwajima, and Otsuki without long driving

Upon leaving the airport, take the expressway toward Susaki. The highway provides smooth, well-maintained driving with gentle curves, allowing you to settle comfortably into long-distance driving.

Afternoon: Susaki Lunch and the Timeless Shimanto River

Drive approximately 40 to 50 minutes along the expressway to Susaki. Head into town for a piping hot bowl of Nabeyaki Ramen, Susaki’s signature comfort food served boiling in earthen clay pots with chicken broth, thin noodles, raw egg, and fish cake. It provides comforting warmth and energy for the road ahead.

After lunch, continue west on the toll-free expressway section until the current terminus at Shimanto-cho Chuo IC. From here, follow Route 56 southward along the Pacific coastline through Kuroshio Town toward Shimanto City. For connections with wider Shikoku road trips, refer to our Domestic 2-Night 3-Day Itinerary. Arriving near Nakamura, make a mandatory stop at Sada Chinka-bashi, the longest and lowest submersible bridge on the Shimanto River.

Highlights: The iconic parapetless bridge spanning the pristine blue waters of the Shimanto River, designed to submerge safely during seasonal floods without washing away.

Practical Tip: Park your car at the dedicated visitor lot on the riverbank and explore the bridge on foot for safe and pleasant photography.

Walking across the bridge with the clear river flowing directly beneath your feet offers a profound sense of tranquility. Watch for canoes and traditional sightseeing boats gently drifting along the tranquil water.

Evening: Regional Cuisine in Nakamura and Overnight Stay

Proceed into downtown Nakamura, checking into your accommodation by 17:00. Nakamura, historically dubbed the Little Kyoto of Tosa, offers charming grid-pattern streets packed with friendly local izakayas and dining spots.

For dinner, savor Kochi’s celebrated seared bonito tataki alongside river delicacies such as crispy deep-fried river shrimp, fragrant green laver seaweed tempura, and grilled sweetfish. Pair your meal with famous local sake like Tosatsuru or Tsukasa Botan before getting a restful night of sleep.

DAY 2 Immersive Kashiwajima ― Floating Boats and Emerald Inlets

Route Intent: Arrive at Kashiwajima during the prime morning hours to observe the famous floating boat phenomenon under optimal sun angles, followed by leisurely afternoon sightseeing around Otsuki Town.

Who this itinerary is NOT suitable for & Key Constraints: Kashiwajima is not accessible without a car, as public transit is limited to very few daily services. Travelers prone to motion sickness should prepare for the winding coastal curves along Prefectural Route 43. Furthermore, during heavy rain or rough sea conditions, water clarity disappears entirely, making this destination unsuitable for inflexible schedules.

Morning: Scenic Drive to Kashiwajima and Floating Boat Viewing

Depart Nakamura around 08:30, driving west along Route 56 to Sukumo, then joining Route 321 (Ashizuri Sunny Road) into Otsuki Town. Turn onto Prefectural Route 43 and follow the winding coastline until the breathtaking emerald waters of Kashiwajima appear before you.

Kashiwajima has a perimeter of roughly 4 km with about 400 local residents. It is connected to the mainland by two bridges: the historic Kashiwajima Bridge and the newer Shin-Kashiwajima Bridge. The channel between these two bridges is where the famous floating boat illusion occurs. Facing the junction of the Kuroshio Current and the Bungo Channel, these waters harbor nearly one-third of all marine fish species found in Japan.

The floating boat phenomenon occurs when extraordinary clarity combines with high midday sun between 10:00 and 14:00 on calm, windless days (wind speeds under 2 m/s) from July to September. Sunlight penetrates straight to the white sandy seabed, casting crisp dark boat shadows that create the illusion of vessels floating in mid-air.

Duration: Approx. 1 hr 30 min to 2 hr

Highlights: Vibrant emerald and cobalt water gradients where moored fishing boats appear suspended above the sea floor.

Practical Tip: Jumping from Kashiwajima Bridge is strictly prohibited by local regulations for safety reasons. Parking on residential roads is strictly barred; always use designated paid parking lots.

Stroll carefully along the pedestrian bridge walkway, admiring the underwater coral and tropical fish visible from above with your naked eyes.

Afternoon: Visitor Center, Shirahama Beach & Otsuki Highlights

After soaking in the bridge views, visit the Kashiwajima Tourism Information Center established in February 2019 to learn about local marine ecology and conservation. Visitors are strictly required to take all trash home to preserve this fragile natural environment.

Next, visit Shirahama Beach on the eastern side of the island. This shallow, sandy beach is a designated swimming area in summer. Note that swimming outside the safety buoys is strictly prohibited due to swift currents and boat channels. Wear marine shoes or sneakers rather than simple sandals to traverse rocky shorelines safely.

Leaving Kashiwajima, drive back along Route 43 to view the towering granite cliffs of Odo Coast and Kannon Rock. Then, stop at Roadside Station Fureai Park Otsuki in Hiromi to browse local citrus, strawberries, farm produce, and farmed bluefin tuna delicacies.

Roadside Station Fureai Park Otsuki

Duration: Approx. 45 min to 1 hr

Highlights: Regional agricultural and seafood specialties, local fruit soft-serve ice cream, and travel assistance.

Evening: Fresh Seafood in Sukumo City and Overnight Stay

In the late afternoon, make the short 30-minute drive to Sukumo City and check into your hotel. Facing the fertile Bungo Channel, Sukumo Bay is famous for delectable seafood including silver-stripe round herring (kibinago).

Enjoy a leisurely evening feast of fresh sashimi, simmered sea bream, and local sake at a neighborhood restaurant before resting up for tomorrow’s return journey.

DAY 3 Sukumo to Kure & Kochi Airport ― Market Feast & Return Drive

Route Intent: Begin heading north in the morning to arrive in Kure for an authentic market lunch, seamlessly connecting with the expressway back to Kochi Airport in time for late afternoon flights.

Morning: Northbound Coastal Drive on Route 56

Depart Sukumo around 09:00, retracing Route 56 north past Nakamura. As you drive along Ukibuchi in Kuroshio Town, take in the vast Pacific surf rolling onto wide sandy beaches. Stop briefly at roadside rest areas to enjoy ocean views and stretch your legs.

Join the free expressway section at Shimanto-cho Chuo IC and exit at Nakatosa IC toward the historic fishing port of Kure.

Afternoon: Fresh Bonito at Kure Taisho-machi Market

Arrive at Kure Taisho-machi Market between 11:30 and 12:00. This nostalgic covered market dates back to the Meiji period, featuring stalls run by local fishermen’s families. Order thick cuts of freshly straw-seared bonito tataki served with coarse sea salt, garlic slices, and wasabi for an unforgettable culinary finale.

Alternative Itinerary Adjustments

Travel in rural Shikoku is heavily influenced by weather. Having flexible alternative plans ensures a seamless journey even if conditions shift unexpectedly.

Rainy Day Adjustments

On rainy days, the floating boat illusion cannot be seen due to lack of direct sunlight and surface ripples. Pivot to these indoor cultural attractions:

  • Ashizuri Aquarium SATOUMI (Tosashimizu City): A state-of-the-art aquarium showcasing the Kuroshio marine ecosystem.
  • Shimanto River Dragonfly Nature Park (Shimanto City): Indoor galleries featuring global dragonfly varieties and freshwater fauna.
  • Ashizuri Onsen Hot Springs: Relaxing coastal hot spring baths overlooking the stormy Pacific Ocean.

Flight Delays Over One Hour

If your arrival flight is delayed by over an hour on Day 1, bypass Sada Chinka-bashi Bridge and drive directly via the expressway to your hotel in Nakamura. Route 56 has few streetlights at night, making daytime driving much safer.

Driver Fatigue Mitigation

Long-Distance Driving Fatigue Management:

Driving over 320 km round-trip can be tiring. Incorporate these safety habits:

  • Rotate Drivers Regularly: Switch drivers every 90 minutes between expressway and local segments.
  • Frequent Roadside Rest Stops: Rest for 15 minutes at well-equipped roadside stations such as Fureai Park Otsuki and Nabura Tosa Saga.
  • Consider Sightseeing Tour Buses: Travelers who prefer not to drive can utilize the Shimanto Ashizuri sightseeing bus operated by Kochi Seinan Kotsu.

Why We Omitted the Tip of Cape Ashizuri

Cape Ashizuri is the most famous cape in southern Shikoku, but we deliberately omitted its tip from this itinerary to prioritize Kashiwajima during the peak midday hours between 10:00 and 14:00. The detour adds up to 2 hours of winding coastal driving, risking missed lighting at Kashiwajima.

Choosing convenient overnight bases ensures minimal driving fatigue during this extended road trip.
