Air Busan sold Shizuoka to Busan from JPY 500 one way under a promotion called “A Busan trip departing from Shizuoka!”. Tickets had to be issued between 20 and 26 August 2026, for travel out to 15 March 2027, and two JPY 2,000 coupons came with each account.
The JPY 500 is the fare line alone, and the JPY 4,000 in coupons never reaches the airfare
Airport taxes and the fuel surcharge sit outside that JPY 500, so the number that matters only appears once the booking screen shows a total. On Korea routes the taxes and surcharge routinely come to several times the fare line, which is why two airlines advertising the same headline can end up hundreds of yen apart at checkout. Departures from Japan also carry the international tourist tax, JPY 3,000 per person since 1 July 2026. Air Busan itself shows how differently the word “discount” can work: its Takamatsu departure coupon, running at the same time, cut the price on the spot instead. Reading fare displays is covered in LCC cheap flight booking techniques.
The coupons are the part most people read wrong. They apply to add-on service bundles — the screen where seat selection or checked baggage is bought — and never to the ticket, so no one had JPY 4,000 taken off an airfare here.
Two clocks run through this promotion and they are five months apart. The ticket could be flown as late as 15 March 2027; the coupons only covered travel to 24 October 2026. Anyone who grabbed a winter fare was left holding perks with nowhere to spend them. The coupons themselves also expired on 26 August, used or not, with no restoration and no extension — so a ticket issued on the final day left a single day, the same day, to spend them.
Refunds work the same one-sided way. A ticket refunded in full does not bring a used coupon back, and change or cancellation fees apply at the normal rate whether or not a coupon was applied. Since the fare line is the smallest part of this trip, the figure worth pricing first is the rest of it: what a night in Seomyeon or Haeundae costs moves the total further than the JPY 500 ever did.
