Malaysia Airlines put its Japan routes on sale from 7 August to 20 August 2026, for travel between 7 August 2026 and 31 May 2027. Return totals with the fuel surcharge and taxes included started at JPY 72,900 from Tokyo to Denpasar, and at JPY 202,480 in business class.

The JPY 72,900 is not on the official page, and the cheapest destinations are not in Malaysia

What the campaign page carries as text is the selling window to 20 August, the travel window to 31 May 2027, the covered routes and the benefits. Not one figure in yen appears on it. Every amount below comes from sky-budget’s report of 8 August 2026, so treat it as a guide until the booking screen shows you a total.

OsakaKuala LumpurJPY 108,690+
TokyoKuala LumpurJPY 114,020+
OsakaLondonJPY 182,880+
TokyoLondonJPY 184,910+

Return totals with the fuel surcharge and taxes included, as reported on 2026-08-08. For a ticket issued on or after 1 July 2026 the tax side of that total already carries the Japanese international tourist tax of JPY 3,000.

Read down the table and the oddity is plain. This is a Malaysia Airlines sale, and the cheapest destinations sit outside Malaysia. Tokyo to Kuala Lumpur is JPY 114,020, which is JPY 41,120 more than Tokyo to Denpasar. The routes the airline lists as covered by the benefits and the routes carrying the low fares are two different sets, so choosing by the headline alone can land you on the expensive half of the same sale.

The exclusions live in the terms rather than the fare table. Peak periods are out, a point the page repeats in three separate places, so Obon and the New Year need dates entered and availability checked before anything else. A booking that contains a sector operated by another carrier — a codeshare — is excluded, and so is a multi-city booking. Only the official site and the app qualify; a travel agency or the call centre gets neither the fare nor the benefits. Three benefits ride along with it: 10 per cent off seat selection and excess baggage, a further 5 per cent for Enrich members booking direct, and a bonus side trip that adds one of eight Malaysian cities via Kuala Lumpur for taxes alone. Setting a total like this one against an LCC fare quoted before tax tells you nothing, which is a separate problem of reading fares on different bases.

Who it’s forTravellers connecting in Kuala Lumpur who want to see a second Malaysian city on the way home. The bonus side trip carries no extra fare, only taxes, and the routes are covered in the three-night Kuala Lumpur itinerary and the five-night Penang itinerary. It is the wrong sale for anyone who wants Kuala Lumpur non-stop at the lowest price: at JPY 114,020 that route is near the top of this table, not the bottom.
Already booked?Check where you bought it. A booking made through an agency or the call centre carries neither the sale fare nor the benefits. Enrich members pick up the extra 5 per cent only when logged in and booking on the official site or app. Itineraries with a codeshare sector, and multi-city bookings, were outside the terms from the start.
Compared with past salesMalaysia Airlines runs a sale of this shape most months. The low point was JPY 53,550 in April, JPY 64,480 in May, JPY 69,630 in June and the mid-64,000s in July, which makes August’s JPY 72,900 the dearest of the five and JPY 19,350 above April. August is peak summer demand, so waiting for the next round is a real option. July’s round, which stacked 10 per cent off for Visa payments, was built along much the same lines.

More: Osaka is cheaper on all four shared destinations, by JPY 1,230 to JPY 9,430

Four destinations appear from both Tokyo and Osaka. Bangkok and Phuket run JPY 74,300 from Osaka against JPY 83,730 from Tokyo, a gap of JPY 9,430. Kuala Lumpur is JPY 108,690 against JPY 114,020, a gap of JPY 5,330. London is JPY 182,880 against JPY 184,910, or JPY 2,030. Singapore is JPY 76,400 against JPY 77,630, or JPY 1,230.

Only the Bangkok gap is large enough to weigh against the cost of getting to Itami or Kansai in the first place. At JPY 1,230 to JPY 2,030, Singapore and London give no reason to change departure airport at all. If the side trip tempts you into an extra night, what a night in Kuala Lumpur costs is worth checking before the fare difference decides anything.
